Burgh Island

Burgh Island is without doubt one of the most beautiful art deco hotels in the UK (possibly the world). Sitting just off the Devon coast Burgh Island exudes 1930's glamour.

Every room is different in size and colour but all have the luxuries a 21st century flapper might expect: crisp Beltramé linen, retro radios, luscious chocolates and bespoke soft furnishings. The marble bathrooms all have fluffy white towels and locally-made Burgh Island toiletries. The hotel features unusual and authentic furniture, original pictures, news clippings and archive photographs.

If you've decided to have an art deco themed wedding this is the venue for you. The hotel perform civil ceremonies, and although they have a limited number of bedrooms they ferry guests back the mainland at the end of the evening on their unique hydralic sea tractor (see below) which is an icon of the hotel.

The famous Sea Tractor was designed in 1969 by Robert Jackson CBE (a pioneer of the nuclear power station programme in the ‘50s) in exchange for a case of champagne and costing £9,000 to build.

Rock the Dress

To start our look back at 2010 I've picked a Rock the Dress shoot which was a new service we now offer our  Brides. These shoots have become more and more popular as they give the bride a chance to wear her dress again and to have pictures taken in more quirky and fun location. Sometimes called 'Cherish the Dress' or 'Trash the Dress', either way they're an opportunity for the bride to wear her wedding dress again without all the stress of the wedding. At these shoots the bride can relax and have fun.

The very talented Esther Coombs was one of our first brides to be a part of our Rock the Dress shoot. Esther's and her husband Drew had a vintage inspired wedding with bunting, hay bales, jams and ice cream. Her dress was an original 50s dress with added yellow net detail, truely beautiful.

Love those shoes!

Happy New Year

With 2010 a distant memory by now and the promise of 2011 being the most fabulous year yet, here at Joanna Wilkinson Photography we're going to use January to look back at the 'best of 2010' beautiful weddings we've photographed. It will be a great opportunity to showcase some of the amazing venues, dresses, flowers, shoes, accessories and every thing else that we loved during the last 12 months.

Christmas is a popular time to get engaged so hopefully these blog posts will inspire you in your wedding planning.

By Royal Appointment…

I’m now officially a photographer by Royal appointment as I recently had the honour of being the photographer at the Sesquicentenary (that’s 150th) Dinner for the Thames Rowing Club whose patron happens to be none other than H.R.H. Prince Michael of Kent.

The dinner took place at the fabulous Stationers Hall in Central London. The Stationers' Company is the City of London Livery Company for the visual and graphic communications industries. If you’re looking for a beautiful and unusual wedding venue in London this is one worth considering.

BMF

As well as being a wedding photographer I’m also hired to do photo shoots for other people and other businesses. This was the case when I was invited to spend the morning with the Hampstead BMF (British Military Fitness) class at the beginning of December.

For those of you who have not come across BMF before they are the largest and longest running provider of outdoor fitness classes in the UK. The classes take place at parks across the UK and the instructors are serving or former members of the armed forces. BMF classes are a proper workout. Participants get dirty, sweaty and work hard, I should know as I go to these classes!

If you fancy building up a sweat and getting dirty all for the good cause of getting fit, check out the BMF website - http://www.britmilfit.com/

Covent Garden Wedding Fair

With much excitement Joanna Wilkinson Photography took part in our first wedding fair on 31st October 2010. The venue was the stunningly beautiful, and recently refurbished Connaught Rooms in Covent Garden. As this was our first wedding fair we’d decided back in September to do some research and attend another wedding fair to see exactly what people put on their stands and how we could make ourselves stand out from the crowd.  To us the less is more approach is what we felt would work best. We’d looked at so many other photographers who try to cram hundreds of photos on to their tables, either in frames, albums, on flyers or anything they could print on with the result that there was just too much to take in and often put people off. So we decided to use 3 strong images and frame them beautifully in large golden ornate frames. We also printed up via our favourite printers Moo.com postcards that customers could take away with them. We used twenty of our personal favourite images and I’m thrilled with how they turned out. I may be bias but I think the simple elegance of our exhibit made us stand out from the crowd.

We were thrilled to have lots of visitors to our stand and to meet such lovely brides and grooms. If you were at the wedding fair and would like to speak to us again we’d love to hear from you, so please send us an email at info@joannawilkinson.com

Welcome to our new website.

Welcome to the new Joanna Wilkinson website. After many designs, meetings and drawings on bits of paper the site is finally ready to go live. The new site is intended to showcase the many beautiful brides and grooms I've had the pleasure to photograph on their special days over the last few years. There's a special bond that forms between a photographer and a bride and groom. I get to meet brides and grooms months before the wedding for the engagement shoot where I happily chat for hours about all the wedding details, then on the wedding day itself I'm there at the start of the day to watch the bride get ready, then walk down the aisle to get married, and through to the party in the evening which is just fantastic. I also love meeting up with brides after their wedding for a Rock the Dress shoots. Although there should be no need to find an excuse to put you dress on again a Rock the Dress shoot is by far the best reason.

Over the coming weeks and months I'll be featuring weddings, ideas and latest trends for next years wedding season on this news feed, so bookmark this page and enjoy a regular dip in to all things wonderfully wedding.

Joanna Wilkinson will be exhibiting at the Covent Garden Wedding Fair on 31st October 2010 at the Connaught Rooms. Tickets are free so come and meet us. www.coventgardenweddingshow.co.uk
